Malaysia wins 3 bronze, 1 silver at IOAI 2025, Beijing

Beijing, China - Aug 9, 2025 Sat
Malaysia sent four students to the 2nd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), held from Aug 2 - 9, 2025 in Beijing, China. All four students did well, returning with 3 bronze medals and 1 silver medal. Close to 300 students from nearly 60 countries participated in thie international event.
At IOAI 2025, students are required to solve six difficult AI tasks over a span of two days. The first three tasks on Day 1 build upon official take home tasks distributed to students one month in advance, while the final three tasks on Day 2 are fresh problems unrelated to previously distributed material. In addition, students also undertook a fun team challenge (i.e. scores not counted towards olympiad medals) that involved programming a Galbot humanoid robot on wheels to pick up and sort objects using its array of sensors and manipulator arm.
The Malaysian team this year underwent a lengthy training and selection process. It started from public selection via MAIO 2025 in March, open to all students studying in Malaysia below the age of 20, and ended with a national team training camp for the top 4 students that ran for three days prior to our departure to Beijing. We are pleased to see our efforts this year come to fruition. Many thanks to the dedication of our students throughout the training and selection process, as well as the patience and support from their parents.
The Malaysian team roster, listed below in alphabetical order:
- Khor Kai Jie (Bronze medal)
- Lim Ming Wen (Bronze medal)
- Ryan Kua Yi Jie (Bronze medal)
- Yong Zi Hong (Silver medal)
- Tan Nian Wei (Team leader)
- Foo Tun Jing (Deputy team leader)

It is a joy to see Malaysia produce talented youth that can be competitive on the world stage when equipped with the proper training. We look forward to seeing more bright minds to participate in our training and selection programme for the upcoming 2026 season!
